The Nyarlathotep Event takes place after the first book in the Arthur Wallace series. You can read it first, though. Its ten short chapters should show you most of the reasons why you should read the first book too. Also, you can check if the present tense works for you. It works for Arthur Wallace. There is a mild spoiler in this short story regarding one of the characters, but it's not too big of a deal since you wouldn't be surprised by what happens to that character in No Hero anyway. Arthur is sent after Nyarlathotep. Even though the fear, twisted reality and horrible visions the deity causes are real enough, Arthur manages to make everything hilarious. I was kind of indifferent towards him in the first book (probably thanks to some of the other characters that managed to ruin parts of it for me), but I loved him here. As for as the two female characters that messed up the first book (kind of), one of them doesn't make an appearance at all and the other one has a couple of lines thrown in, so that was good. I am hoping they grow on me in the next one.You can read The Nyarlathotep Event here.
